New York’s EV Charging Standards Bill for New Buildings

In March 2025, New York adopted a law directing the state energy conservation construction code to establish new standards for EV infrastructure in new buildings with off-street parking. Starting in 2027, new buildings will be required to include electric vehicle ready infrastructure and charging stations, with different requirements for different types of buildings. For detached one- and two-family dwellings, the code may provide for EV ready infrastructure, while larger buildings must have a minimum number of parking spaces with EV infrastructure and charging stations. The bill allows for some exemptions, such as for affordable housing projects or buildings where installation is technically infeasible. The standards will also require clear signage indicating the availability and location of EV infrastructure.
