Massachusetts Net Metering Revisions
In February 2024, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities issued an order revising the state’s Net Metering Program regulations to allow for municipal and state-owned facilities to take advantage of net metering, exemptions from program caps for solar facilities generating between 60 kilowatts (kW) and 2,000 kW (for private facilities) or 10,000 kW (for public facilities), and restructuring of cost recovery to save ratepayers an estimated $10 million. Net metering credits are also now able to be transferred between utilities, which could serve as a model for other states. The revisions are expected to expand distributed energy generation across the state.
