Report, Opportunities for Integrating Electric and Gas Planning

To successfully electrify traditionally gas-powered sectors, Public Utility Commissions should consider integrating the planning process of public gas and electric utilities, according to a January 2025 report from Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. To date, processes for planning electricity and gas delivery have largely been siloed, and only a few jurisdictions have started to examine how these two processes could be linked together. Integrating electric and gas planning will require a range of reforms to address challenges with existing planning processes. The report presents specific implementation steps that a jurisdiction can take for each characteristic and indicator of integrated electric and gas planning.
