Report, Limiting fossil fuel production as the next big step in climate policy
The December 2018 issue of Nature Climate Change included a proposal modeling the climate impacts if California’s Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources were to cease issuing permits for new, discretionary oil wells. Accounting for economic elasticity, the paper concludes that this approach would decrease global oil consumption between 16 and 48 million barrels per year.
